Over the years, Shearwater has incorporated the work of many impressive musicians. The projects they have been involved with outside of Shearwater are too numerous for exhaustive coverage, so this page only serves to give a small taste of their diverse talents.

Jonathan Meiburg
It's safe to say that Jonathan Meiburg is the driving force behind Shearwater. The band's origins were humble - the album The Dissolving Room was intended to be a one-off collaboration between Meiburg and Will Sheff, but the results were so good that the pair extended the partnership for three more releases (Everybody Makes Mistakes, Winged Life, and the EP Thieves.) As of 2006's Rook, Meiburg completely assumed the songwriting for Shearwater and has been responsible for the vision and aesthetic of the project since. Besides his distinctive lead vocals, he plays guitar, piano, accordion, and I'd like to believe that sometimes, in the furtive dark of the new moon, perhaps, he still plays the banjo.
Meiburg's musical solo and collaborative projects are numerous. In addition, he is a writer of a critically acclaimed book, A Most Remarkable Creature, and has a growing opus of thought-provoking articles to his credit. Just for fun, he has a Master's degree in biogeography, specializing in the distribution of birds, and is known to disappear away to scientific expeditions to the Falklands, the Amazon, etc. etc. The last time I saw a resume like his was Buckaroo Banzai.

Between 2000-2008, Meiburg was a member of Will Sheff's band Okkervil River (as have a number of Shearwater members). Here's a photo of Meiburg with Okkervil in 2002. And in 2007 on Flickr, by KEXP.
Buteo Buteo: 2004 solo album originally released as a tour-only cd; made available as a digital download in 2010. Track listing: "All the Pretty Horses," "Sea Robins," "The Elephant Walk," "The Assassin," "The Biology Building," "Switchbacks," "Unharmed," "Child of Never."
Fall to Grace soundtrack (2006): Not to be confused with the 2013 movie of the same name. The soundtrack was written by Meiburg and Travis Weller, violinist on early Shearwater albums. You can listen to excerpts if you follow the link and then click on Music/Original Score. The Shearwater song "A Hush" is also used in the film.
Why I Love My Home (songs for Charles Burchfield): "Hymn to the Valences," "The Moth and the Milky Way." These songs were written for the opening of a Whitney Museum of American Art exhibition, "Heat Waves in a Swamp: The Paintings of Charles Burchfield" which ran from 24 June to 17 October 2010. They were originally performed with Andy Stack of Wye Oak. They were released on vinyl as part of the Graveface Charity Series in 2012, and are currently available for digital download.
Blue Water White Death. Released on 20 October 2010, a collaboration with Jamie Stewart of Xiu Xiu recorded in a week's time with the production assistance of John Congleton. Track Listing:"This is the Scrunchyface of My Dreams," "Song for the Greater Jihad," "Grunt Tube," "Nerd Future," "The End of Sex," "Death for Christmas," "Gall," "Rendering the Juggalos." Dan Duszynski
Dan Duszynski got to know Jonathan Meiburg when his then-wife's band Cross Record toured with Shearwater during the Jet Plane and Oxbow period. The three musicians enjoyed a creative synthesis and formed the band Loma (see the Loma page on this site.) Duszynski continues to perform with Shearwater, and co-produced, mixed and musically contributed to The Great Awakening. Before his involvement with Cross Record, Loma and Shearwater, he was also a member of the bands Any Kind, Gold Motel and This is Me Smiling. He operates Dandysounds Studio in Dripping Springs, Texas.

Kim Burke
Outside of the songwriting team of Meiburg and Sheff, Kim Burke is Shearwater's oldest member, and featured on every album and tour until 2011, playing acoustic and electric bass (and the occasional glockenspiel). Surprisingly, her other endeavors aren't musical at all: she is a well-respected playwright, the winner of a Jerome Fellowship in 2005.

He recently rejoined for the studio recording of Jet Plane and Oxbow. Like many members of Shearwater, he plays multiple instruments, but primarily lap steel and guitar with some organ thrown in for good measure, and also provides background vocals. He has played with a number of other artists, most notably Okkervil River, and contributed a track, "TX71" to the compilation Weary Engine Blues: A Tribute To Jason Molina.

Thor Harris
Thor Harris was the group's primary percussionist until 2011. Currently the drummer for the Swans, his discography is amazing, far too extensive to list here. He's also known for his down-to-earth wisdom, his practical skills (his self-built home is somewhat of a local landmark) and as an advocate for people with depression.

Jesca Hoop
A well-known artist in her own right, Jesca Hoop was the official "fellow traveler" on the 2014 tour, supplying vocals and incidental percussion; she also provided some vocals on Jet Plane and Oxbow. Her most recent work is a collaboration with Iron and Wine's Sam Beam called Love Letter for Fire, due to be released in April of 2016. Will Sheff
Sharing the singing and songwriting for the band from its inception through 2005, it's clear that Will Sheff is central to the early history of Shearwater. Besides, unlike "Shearwater," a search for "Okkervil River" on Google is pretty straightforward...
